If you’re looking for the best winter trails in Wisconsin for fat biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, Winman Trails is the place to be. Located in Winchester, just north of Manitowish Waters, this Northwoods winter recreation area offers a little something for everyone who loves playing outside in the snow. With well-groomed trails, a winter wonderland through a forest with snow-covered trees, and a welcoming community, Winman is a top destination for winter adventure.
The Chalet: The Heart of Winter at Winman
For many, the chalet is the starting point of their adventure. It’s a busy and welcoming space where skiers, snowshoers, and fat bikers gather before and after hitting the trails. The small fireplace, cozy seating, and warm drinks make it the perfect place to relax between runs. Conversations about Winman Trails' grooming and conditions are constant, with visitors exchanging updates and advice.
The chalet is also well-equipped with two changing rooms, two bathrooms, and a small shop where you can grab a Coke, a local Wisconsin beer, a glass of wine, and any last-minute gear you may need. While hot beverages are not sold in the store, visitors can make coffee or tea in a communal area. Whether you need an extra pair of gloves, a warm drink, or a comfortable place to regroup, the chalet has you covered.
Pro Tip: In the shop, ask for Hinterland Blueberry Wheat, a local favorite of mine, and many others. 🍻
Winman Trails Grooming & Conditions.
Grooming is done based on conditions, not daily. During my visit, the fat biking trails were groomed on day one, but after fresh snowfall the following day, they were not immediately re-groomed. However, the cold overnight temperatures helped set the snow, and the trails were still incredible for riding.
For skiers and snowshoers, the grooming schedule may also vary.
Fat Biking at Winman Trails: Flow, Climbs, and Snow-Packed Fun.
I come to Winman Trails in the winter for the fat biking. The trails offer a mix of rolling terrain, berms, and winding paths through the forest, making every ride feel like an adventure. While many Winman Trails trails are closed to fat biking in the winter, the ones that remain open provide plenty of variety and excitement.

I typically start with Scout, a green trail that serves as a great warm-up. It has a short and long version, depending on how much warm-up I need. After that, I always hit Winman One, which leads to the hub—a key point on the trail system where you can choose to take fun downhill trails or loop back to the chalet. From there, I often take Earn It Up, a quicker way to the hub than retaking Winman One.

My Favorite Fat Biking Trails at Winman. They are so much fun:
Send It: In the summer, this is a downhill jump trail. In the winter, it is super flowy and faster than the other trails open for fat biking. I can take Earn It up all day to Send It back down.
Roller Creek: This is a longer flow trail with lots of berms.
Winman One from the hub: The first half of Winman One is more of a climb. The rest of the trail after crossing the hub is flow-downhill fun.
Cross-Country Skiing at Winman: Smooth Glides, Rolling Hills & Dog-Friendly Routes.

One of the highlights is a one-mile loop, perfect for warming up or a quick lap before heading into longer sections of the network. Some skiers even venture beyond the marked trails, crossing a frozen lake for an added adventure when conditions allow. The mix of forest-lined trails, open stretches, and serene winter landscapes makes every ski at Winman a unique and memorable experience. Dogs are welcome on designated trails only, marked with a paw print on the map. They must either be leashed or follow voice commands reliably. Be especially mindful when leaving and returning to the trailhead, as these sections can be busier. For more details, check Winman’s full dog policy.
Snowshoeing at Winman: Explore Scenic Forest Trails.
Winman Trails offers dedicated snowshoeing routes, winding through diverse Northwoods landscapes. With over 7 miles of marked trails, snowshoers can explore rolling hills, scenic overlooks, and peaceful wooded sections. Whether you're looking for a short, easy hike or a longer trek through fresh snow, there’s a route suited for every ability level.

Some snowshoe trails cross ski and fat biking paths, so staying aware of other trail users is important. Snowshoeing is a great way to disconnect from the crowds, enjoy the quiet of the forest, and experience winter in its purest form.
Winman’s dedicated snowshoeing trails provide a quiet escape into the Northwoods. If you don’t have your own snowshoes, the chalet has some available for you to borrow. With marked routes winding through deep forests, snowshoers can enjoy a peaceful, less-traveled winter hike. It’s an excellent way to disconnect and explore while getting a great workout.
