I was a first-time skier not that long ago. It can be overwhelming if you are new to skiing or thinking about trying it out. It is essential to understand. There are layers to think about. This is your go-to guide for women's ski and snowboard clothing from head to toe. We are here to help you understand what to wear for your first time skiing. To know whether you can wear ski clothes for snowboarding and vice versa, how to layer, and offer some advice on brands we love.

The difference between ski and snowboard gear.

While ski and snowboard apparel share similarities, there are differences tailored to the unique demands of each sport. All of the below options cater to both. However, some brands have a loser fit in the same style if you want that fit for snowboarding:

  1. Ski Clothing:

Opt for form-fitting jackets and pants to enhance aerodynamics. Look for high-waisted pants for extra coverage.

  2. Snowboard Clothing:

Choose a looser fit for jackets and pants to allow unrestricted movement. Lower-rise pants complement the crouched snowboarding stance. You want to be able to crush those ski parks. :)

What does a ski outfit consist of?

It is all in the layers. But that also depends on where you are skiing, the temperature, and the wind. Overland Girl is based in the Midwest, where it can get super cold and windy. For the Midwest, a jacket with insulation is often best. Layers are critical wherever you might be, and who skies without gloves, not me? Below is our list of the essentials to get you started on building your ski wardrobe.

  1. Base layers: Moisture management, keeping you dry and regulating body temperature.

  2. Mid-layers: Insulation for warmth by trapping and retaining body heat.

  3. Outerwear: Keeps you dry and the wind at bay.

  4. Ski gloves are super important as your fingers will be the first thing to feel cold.

  5. Neck gaiter: Offer extra neck and face protection against wind and cold. You can pull them up over your mouth to your nose for extra layering.

  6. Ski socks: Keep feet warm, dry, and comfortable with cushioning and moisture-wicking properties. Ski socks tend to be pulled up to the knees. That extra length will keep you warm.

Here are our top four ski/snowboard outfits for women.

Your look on the slopes should be as unique as you are. The options are endless, from shells to layer up or fully insulated pieces pre-filled to keep you warm, from that loose-fitting classic snowboard feel to the fit of the classic ski brands. We have looks to match your style.

While we recommend kits to treat yourself to a whole new look, each piece stands out on its own, and the bold use of color can be swapped to create the perfect style for your budget and conditions.

Our recommended base layers.

Base layers are what keep you warm. Remember, the outer shell jacket and pants keep you dry and beat the wind off you. Regardless, you should wear a base layer under your skit suit. Base layers are not complicated. We are going to give you two choices. My belief is to go with the brands where that is their thing. What does that mean? I would not necessarily buy base layers from Stio or Mammut. Hands down, these are the best, in my opinion.

  • Smartwool Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer Bottoms $115 on EVO. Best Seller.

Our recommended socks.

Ski socks can be fun because they have fun designs and patterns. But remember, it is about keeping your feet warm. Even in those chunky boots, your toes will get cold.

Gloves: The basics with must-have ski companions.

Hands down, one brand of gloves is the hero to keeping your fingers warm and toasty: Hestra. It is the brand we use on the slopes.

Hestra gloves, hailing from Sweden, are our top pick for keeping fingers warm on the slopes. Known for high-quality materials and ergonomic design, they provide excellent insulation and flexibility, ideal for beginner skiers.

Material:
Goatskin, Polyester
Cuff Style: Over the Cuff
Glove Warmth: Warmest
Colors: Five
Sizes: 7-12

Keep your face safe: The ultimate facemask for all-day comfort, Blackstrap.

Now, make-up doesn’t do so well with covering our face. But, the best way to preserve our face in the cold and wind is with a balaclava. Everyone on the slopes is most likely wearing one. For beginner skiers, choosing a BlackStrap the Hood Balaclava is an intelligent decision, and you'll find this brand in almost every ski shop at resorts. These facemasks offer protection against cold, wind, and sun. They have about every color under the moon to choose from, too.

What do I wear skiing?

I just started skiing in 2023. My choice at the time was based on being a novice skier. I am pleased with my ski outfit from head to toe. My outfit is by 686. And I love my skis and boots. My skis are Blizzard. My ski boots are Atomic. You will want to purchase more options once you discover how excellent skiing is. I am working towards that now. In the five above, I would love to buy the Arc’teryx Sentinel Line or the Mammut Haldigrat HS line someday. It is all a personal preference in what works for you, where you will be or are skiing, and your style.
